Photographs

My photographic practice is deeply rooted in the act of documentation. Having moved extensively throughout my life – from my birth in Africa, through my formative years there and in the Netherlands, to periods spent in London, Cumbria, the North East of England, and now the Outer Hebrides – I have cultivated a unique perspective on belonging. While I feel a profound sense of belonging in the world, I recognise that I do not originate from a singular place. This nomadic existence has instilled in me a strong desire to record my experiences and the connections I forge.

Photography, for me, is an immediate and powerful tool for capturing the essence of my surroundings. Its inherent ability to create an image swiftly allows me to record the fleeting moments and evolving landscapes that define my journey. This immediacy is crucial to my process, enabling me to respond directly to the world as I encounter it. My photographic interests span both the micro and macro aspects of life. I am drawn to the intricate details that often go unnoticed, as well as the broader narratives and expansive vistas that shape our existence.

The images I create serve various purposes. Sometimes, they stand as direct records, offering an unmediated glimpse into a specific time and place. At other times, my photographs function as a source of inspiration or as integral components within larger artistic endeavours. They might inform a new project, become part of a mixed-media piece, or serve as a foundation for further creative exploration. In essence, my photography is a continuous dialogue with the world, a way of understanding and expressing my place within it.

Reclaiming Visibility: A Pin-Up Journey Through the Lens of Turning 50

As I celebrated my 50th birthday, I embarked on a creative project that challenges societal perceptions of ageing and femininity. In a series of self-portraits, I donned vibrant wigs and nostalgic outfits reminiscent of my youth, embodying the spirit of a pin-up girl. This artistic exploration serves as both a celebration of my identity and a commentary on how women often become invisible in society after reaching this milestone age. Through these photographs, I reclaim visibility and assert that beauty, confidence, and allure do not diminish with age. This journey is a reflection on the complexities of womanhood, ageing, and the power of self-expression.
